Veterans' Roundabout

We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to name the roundabout on the A259 at Greenways the 'Blind Veterans UK' roundabout.

Now that St Dunstans has become Blind Veterans UK, we feel that it would be a mark of recognition to have the roundabout at the foot of the Centre's location along the A259 named after it.

We are aware that a petition with 100 signatures has already been presented to the Council and hope that people will now sign this e-petition to show support for those who have lost their sight serving their country.

The e-petition will be presented to the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee meeting on the 9th July 2013.

This ePetition ran from 17/05/2013 to 11/07/2013 and has now finished.

191 people signed this ePetition.

Council response

Response provided by the Chair of the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee on 9 July 2013:

"Thank you for this petition.

Following earlier correspondence and more recent contact with Blind Veterans UK we understand it is the intention to seek a permanent name change rather than a temporary license.

The Council has a policy on street naming and numbering and has to follow the correct legal process to re-name an existing street or roundabout. The proposed change of name would have to go through a public consultation process. This would involve asking local people and ward members for their views on the proposals, and consulting other people who might be affected by the name change such as utility companies and emergency services. The Council would also have to take into account any additional costs that may arise as a result of the proposals such as the display of official name plates and the work involved in updating relevant highway records and notifying interested parties.

If a decision is taken to proceed with the change of name there is a statutory procedure under which people may object, and any objections must be heard by a Magistrates’ Court.

The first part of the process would be for Blind Veterans UK to make a formal request to the Council’s Street Naming and Numbering team for the change to be made, who will be able to give further advice on the process".
