Student Safety! Pedestrianise Pelham Street

We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to Support the College financially to create a safe passage in form of a pedestrian zone with trees and seating. Having had several near misses in the last few years and a recorded accident this year, it is crucial to reconsider the traffic arrangements in this area. The road is extremely narrow making it impossible for two way traffic as well as aggravating drivers who force their way through. Having missed out on a huge redevelopment plan, which would have considered a change of road traffic we now feel it is time for a healthy change. We have evidence of a recorded accident which will be shown at the Council meeting in July. Sign this petition now to guarantee a safer crossing in Brighton.

This petition was started due to a Student Voice debate with a large number of students feeling unsafe crossing the roads. Students have also identified a need for benches and seating during break time. "Every year 2,000 full-time, 10,000 part time, over 500 Higher Education and 250 14-16 year old students as well as many international and European students choose City College as their place of further and higher education training. In addition, the College provides training to over 2,000 businesses via its ‘City Business Skills’ department which focuses on employer training needs." We want the College to be a safe and accessible place for students and passers by alike.

This epetition will be presented to the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Cabinet Members Meeting on 4 October 2011.

This ePetition ran from 30/03/2011 to 23/09/2011 and has now finished.

Council response

At the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Cabinet Members Meeting on 4 October 2011 the Cabinet Member for Transport and Public Realm noted the petition and reported that he had met with Phil Frier, Principal of City College, and students to discuss the matter, and that North Laine residents had also raised concerns. He confirmed that discussions would continue and officers would meet with staff and students to consider how to proceed.
