Give us a choice! - Royal Sussex County Hospital Transport Petition

We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to We, the undersigned, welcome the redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital but believe that it should not be approved until the proposals are modified to reduce the traffic impact. The hospital trust should be required to invest at least the same amount of money as it is spending on the new underground car park, on walking, cycling and public transport measures. Only by doing this will visitors and staff be given a real choice of travel, and congestion and air pollution will be minimised.

Background information:
The estimated cost of the new underground car park is around £10million. The current proposals talk of installing a few dropped kerbs, an extra pedestrian crossing (which is in the wrong location), bus stops in the wrong place, real time bus information, and a few advance stop lines for cyclists. No cycle parking is being provided around the site apart from at the front which should be for visitors. This list of measures is likely to cost about a tenth of what is being spent on the new car park.
Indeed, the layout of bus stops and the western pedestrian crossing are all compromised by the car drop-off zone. If this was moved east of the main entrance, then the front could be redesigned in a much better way.
In addition here are some examples of the sorts of measures that are needed:
•New bus and cycle priority measures along Edward St / Eastern Rd.
•Improve the Church St / Grand Parade / Edward St junction to increase bus capacity and improve bus priority measures.
•Full pavement width ‘iconic’ bus shelters for east and westbound buses, with a covered walkway to the main entrance for eastbound bus users.
•A definite commitment to installing real time bus and train information throughout the site.
•Cycle parking spread around the site for staff (in secure and convenient locations).
•Charging points for electric bikes.
•Widen the pavement on the south side of Eastern Road where the bus stops are located.
•Raised crossing point (table) for pedestrians across top of Paston Place and other side roads.
•Re-design Bristol Gate junction to make it more pedestrian friendly.
•Charging points for electric cars.

Will be presented to the Planning, Employment, Economy & Regeneration Cabinet Member Meeting on 2 February 2011
