Ice rink for Sussex

We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to Provide a permanent ice rink for Sussex

There is currently no permanent ice rink in the whole of Sussex!
Ice Skating is a great way for people of all ages to have fun, meet new friends and keep active and healthy.
Sussex has a long and colourfull history with ice skating and many ice hockey players, figure skaters and people who just love to skate desperately need a permanent local ice rink.

Council response

Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation & Tourism gave the following response at his Cabinet Member Meeting on the 23rd March:

"The Council welcomes this petition and we are always pleased to see new voices being added to the on-going dialogue around ice provision for the City.

As petitioners may be aware, the council has been very supportive of the project by Brighton Arena Ltd to build an Olympic standard facility at the vacant Black Rock site (adjacent to the Brighton Marina). The building of the Brighton International Arena would provide the City with two Olympic size ice pads. This would ensure that we had one ice pad always available for public use and one which could also function as a multi-purpose arena. The standard of facility would also be sufficient to attract ice hockey league matches and ice dance and ofcourse allow us to relocate the tremendously popular Holiday on Ice from the Brighton Centre.

The Council have continued to support the BIA project because we believe it will offer the City the standard of permanent ice facility the city needs. However we are always open to the possibilities for temporary facilities in the City. Events such as "Keep Your Skates On" at the Brighton Centre are very popular and we are always open to other options that may present themselves in future. We know that ice skating is always immensely popular.

So in response to your petition. I would like to thank you again, and offer the new Sussex Ice Skating Club every success. I am sure we shall be hearing more from you in the future and it is very gratifying to see that there is still a huge amount of support in the City for a new ice facility."
