Stanmer Park Road Parking

We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to include Stanmer Park Road in residents parking scheme Zone G.

The recent introduction of Zone J, Zone F, Fiveways and Zone G, Ditchling Gardens and Hollingbury Road has had a significantly negative impact on Stanmer Park Road, as it is now the nearest road to Fiveways without resident permits.

Stanmer Park Road is a terraced road with no off road parking similar to the other roads in Zone F and G. It also has a large number of HMO’s, which exacerbates the problem. As a direct result of the introduction of Zone F and G, Stanmer Park Road is now seeing residents of the these zones choosing to park their second cars, camper vans and company vehicles here for extended periods to avoid permit costs. This also includes commuters and people who are shopping or visiting local businesses in Fiveways again to avoid permit or parking ticket costs.

As a consequence we are now finding that any time of day or night we cannot park anywhere near our own homes. We have to double-park to unload groceries and children. Increasingly we have to walk long distances in the dark from where we are able to park, to our homes. People with mobility issues have to walk longer distances to their parked cars and as this is a narrow road, double-parked cars are blocking access for emergency vehicles as well as blocking residents in. We therefore see no alternative but to introduce residents parking to alleviate the lack of parking for residents and wish for consideration of this as a matter of urgency at the next council meeting.

Council response

Over the next few months the Council will be taking into consideration the comments received from a number of roads in the area and discussing this with Ward Councillors. Residents from a number of roads have been advised to outline their concerns in the form of a petition to enable the Council to gauge the strength of feeling for a resident parking scheme in certain areas following the introduction of the Hollingbury Road and Ditchling Gardens (Area G) parking scheme.

If any directly adjoining road or area is highlighted by residents then this could be considered within the parking scheme timetable which was agreed at the ETS Committee last year.

The petition also refers to people parking in Stanmer Park Road while shopping at Fiveways. However, it is worth highlighting that free short term parking is still available at Fiveways following the introduction of the residents’ parking scheme (Area F). Drivers can park for up to one hour outside shops and other businesses In Preston Drove, Ditchling Road and around the Fiveways junction.
