Zebra crossing on Bear road

We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to install a zebra crossing or other pedestrian crossing on Bear Road above the Bevendean road turning.

This is a common place to wish to cross and is perilous. People of all ages have to risk their safety and frequently run across the road in small gaps of traffic. A crossing here would enable safer walks to school and work for all generations. Cars travel at great speed down the hill and a crossing here would slow traffic as the speed limit changes. This has been desperately needed for many years and would improve quality of life for all who use this route.

Council response

Response provided by the Chair of the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee on 13 October 2015:

“Thank you for your petition.

The council has an assessment procedure for the implementation of crossing facilities to ensure safe locations, assess demand and so on.

The council has limited funds and so has to prioritise.

After receiving you petition I have asked the Road Safety Team to survey that particular section of Bear Road in the next round of surveys and if it is judged that a crossing is warranted then it will be included within a recommended crossing programme”.
