Brentwood Road Pedestrian Crossing

We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to install a pedestrian crossing on Brentwood Road, opposite Hollingdean Children's Centre.

Brentwood Road is a major road and bus route, and the point where children need to cross to get to school is a blind bend with parked cars.

Pedestrians, the majority of whom are children, cannot see whether traffic is approaching and cannot be seen as they step out to cross between the cars.

The pedestrian and road traffic are both busy at the school pickup and drop off times between 8.00am and 9.00am and 2.30pm to 3.30pm, compounding the problem.

There are no zig zags or double yellow lines to prevent parking. This is clearly a dangerous stretch of road for pedestrians to cross and urgently needs improvement.

This area of road is used by children attending these 4 educational establishments (a high proportion of these children have additional needs, which make road use particularly hazardous):

HERTFORD JUNIOR SCHOOL 161
PUPIL REFERRAL UNIT 37
CEDAR CENTRE 80
CHERRY TREE NURSERY 50
TOTAL 328 CHILDREN

Plus younger siblings (before heading down to Hertford Infants), parents and babies (including users of Hollingdean Children's Centre), playground users, dog walkers, local residents, bus users, children walking to other schools nearby (Downs, Balfour, Stringer and Varndean), and all the staff at the schools and Children's Centre.

Furthermore, a crossing would benefit the whole area. It would encourage more children to walk to school, increase use of the playground, skatepark and Children's Centre Cafe, and help link the Hollingdean community.

Please prioritise the safety of children in Hollingdean.

Council response

Response provided by the Chair of the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee on 13 October 2015:

“Thank you for your petition.

All requests for new or improved road crossings across the city are analysed rigorously by our Road Safety team. They look at a number of factors including collision data, the width of the road, proximity of junctions and speeds of vehicles.

The way these assessments are carried out has been approved by full council.

Our programme of road crossing works for 2015-16 was agreed earlier this year and is currently being implemented.

Recommendations for 2016-17 based on the highest priority sites across the city are expected to be considered by the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee at a future meeting and your request will be taken into consideration”.
