Hollingdean Sure Start Weekend Opening

We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to allow Hollingdean Sure Start Centre to open at weekends for use as a community hub.

The Hollingdean Sure Start centre is located on Brentwood Road in a fairly remote neighbourhood with few shops, and no places to spend time which are open at weekends. Child poverty and social exclusion is high in this area, which is why the centre was located there in the first place.

In an environment where children’s centres up and down the country have been closed due to lack of funding, we are grateful that our local Sure Start is still running and providing a valuable asset to the community. We feel that more use could be made of it. The centre is right next to Hollingdean Park which is a great facility but under-used at weekends because there are no nearby toilets. A toilet and, ideally, a community café, would attract more people to the park.

Other possibilities could include: a base for selling staple and healthy food at affordable prices; a small library to replace the lost mobile library; a base and rainy-day alternative for outdoor events, such as skate park and athletics events like the popular T in the Park. There is a shortage of weekend venues for classes such as pre-natal and exercise classes, and we know that there would be an interest in using the centre in this way.

We accept that the centre will need to be staffed at all times when open and that there is a need for volunteers willing to make this happen. Many people have expressed an interest in seeing the Sure Start open at weekends. We are confident that enough people can be found for the centre to be staffed at least some weekends, and we are asking for the active support of Council officers to make this happen.
