Objection to a Taxi Rank on Fredrick Place-Brighton Station Gateway Project
Only about 12 to 15 taxis can safely queue in Frederick Place at one time. Where will the supply chain line up? The overspill will clog Gloucester Road, Over Street, Kemp Street, Frederick Street, possibly Foundry Street and even maybe Queens Gardens because of the lack of parking places.
Pollution from diesel engines, noise from those taxis and drivers at night time plus increased traffic flow will definitely impact on the quality of life enjoyed by residents of Frederick Place, Gloucester Road, Over Street and Kemp Street in particular as well as the rest of the North Laine in general.
The junction of Frederick Place and Trafalgar Street will become an unofficial taxi pick-up point. ‘The plug’ lower down in Trafalgar Street will be completely ignored by traffic and that for the sake of possibly 12 to 15 taxis occupying Frederick Place, this remains a costly, inappropriate, unnecessary and detrimental plan for the North Laine.
Trafalgar Lane is totally unsuitable for the purpose envisaged by the proposals. The lane is only three metres wide, not wide enough for two lanes of traffic. Commercial traffic from Travis/Perkins and Warren Evans often block the lane which can only be used by one vehicle at a time. Moreover the turn into Trafalgar Lane from Trafalgar Street is very tight and a regular stream of traffic would cause even more congestion.
The North Laine is a conservation area and any scheme in which there is the potential for an increase in traffic , noise and air pollution should not be considered.

Council response
Response provided by the Chair of the Transport Committee at their meeting on 30 April 2013:
"Thank you for your petition and this issue will be discussed later
during this meeting. I am aware that there has been ongoing
opposition to the proposals from sections of the North Laine
community as well as from North Laine traders. In response to these
concerns a number of alternative transport arrangements have been
investigated. Unfortunately none of these proposals are able to
eliminate negative impact on the area in terms of reduced vehicular
access and possible traffic increases on some streets. Therefore
the report is recommending not to pursue the Frederick place
option".
