Call to assess Cable Car from motorways to seafront

We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to take the initiative and encourage private investment into innovative private projects in Brighton and Hove, at no cost to the council or tax payers, to promote business and employment locally. We ask the council to invite feasibility studies for a new cable car service to take visitors from the motorways directly to the seafront to stop adding to congestion and air pollution in Lewes Road and London Road and other parts of our city.

A competition could be held to decide the best proposal by inviting residents to vote online and at libraries.

This could be a money-earner for the council: a private investor could charge fares to repay the build-cost and pay the council a percentage, or a rental or a licence fee.

It may be an extra visitor attraction with an ideal scenic route to see both the beautiful Sussex Downs and seafront, and could link various attractions and other parts of Brighton and Hove if there is demand.

Locals may use it for getting around town without hold-ups or pollution, possibly encouraging walking and cycling by cutting out difficult parts of current journeys like hills and traffic snarl-ups.

It could be powered by renewables such as wind or tidal power.

We are looking for entrepreneurial activity to help support Brighton and Hove's future success and solve local problems..

Council response

Thank you for your petition, which I duly note.

I can assure you that we are totally committed to improving air quality and tackling congestion across the city, and particularly in the London Road and Lewes Road corridors.

So this is certainly an interesting suggestion, especially as seeking innovation is one of the 5 key principles in the council's Local Transport Plan.

However, even initial consideration of your proposal raises many questions.

I would much prefer to invest our time and money improving existing infrastructure and services, and to encourage and enable as many people as possible to walk, cycle and catch the bus or train to reduce congestion and pollution. They will also get fitter when doing so. This is the focus of our priorities for transport investment, which were approved by the Cabinet earlier this month.

So, I’m afraid to say we have no plans to begin any feasibility studies or hold any competitions about a cable car system for Brighton & Hove. However, should you decide to prepare and submit a full and detailed Business Case we would of course be interested to hear from you again.
